FLIR for Iphone 5 or 5s



FLIR Systems, Inc. announced two new products at CES designed to put thermal imaging into the hands of consumers. The first is a new, consumer-level infrared thermal camera sensor, while the second is a slide-on attachment for Apple iPhone 5 or 5s smartphones that makes use of said sensor. Both could be used to locate lost pets in the dark, look for energy leaking from your house, or to watch for wildlife.


Thermal cameras have a wide variety of uses, including by law enforcement to look for criminals at night or when hiding in brush, as a night vision system by the military, and by environmental inspectors looking for heat leaks from faulty insulation. They are also standard equipment on many UAVs.

FLIR says the technology also has many applications at the consumer level, including locating heating or cooling leaks in buildings, finding studs in walls, or locating water damage. Outdoor uses might include night navigation, wildlife observation, determining if your fish is fully cooked, or that a campfire is completely out. Firemen certainly could find many uses for the device, searching for hotspots or victims in smoke


The company's Lepton Sensor is an OEM module that is the first IR thermal microbolometer that is near the size of the small cameras made to fit into a smartphone or tablet. Unlike some thermal cameras, this small unit does not require an external cooler and has all of its image processing in a single chip. It is also compatible with FLIR's patented Multi-Spectral Dynamic Imaging Technology, which allows pixels from a visible light camera to be combined with the low resolution thermal image to create an enhanced picture.

The Lepton Sensor will be available to OEMs and developers, along with a software development kit. FLIR sees the low-cost thermal sensor being put to work in other tablets, diagnostic tools, cars, toys, building controls, assembly lines, machine vision, and medical devices, and even gaming devices for human tracking.

Demonstrating the proof of its convictions, the company has also released the FLIR ONE. This is a packaged, consumer version of the Lepton IR sensor that takes the form of a sleeve that attaches to an Apple iPhone 5 or 5s. This could create entirely new uses for thermal cameras, as the FLIR ONE combines the thermal camera with the iPhone's abilities to capture, film, transmit, and share images.

"FLIR ONE represents a dramatic step in our pursuit of 'infrared everywhere.'" says Andy Teich, President and CEO of FLIR. "As the first truly consumer focused thermal imager, FLIR ONE introduces thermal imaging technology to a completely new group of customers."

The unit also includes extra battery power for the IR sensor and to extend the life of the smartphone, with the power pack providing about two hours of IR camera use. The FLIR ONE has two cameras – a thermal camera and a more conventional visible light camera. The special chip in the Lepton core combines the images for enhanced resolution, adding detail to the low resolution thermal image.

A worldwide rollout of the FLIR ONE is planned for the coming months, and the price point is expected to be around US$349. The FLIR ONE case will come in gray, white, or a designer gold color. An Android model is expected later in the year.

Phantom and FC40


Last year right around this time, DJI Innovations released its original Phantom quadcopter. The fact that the aircraft was designed to carry a GoPro camera made it quite popular. Then in November, the company started selling the Phantom 2 Vision model, which features its own built-in Wi-Fi-controlled HD camera. It's pretty awesome, but at US$1,199 it's priced $720 more than the base Phantom. Now, DJI has introduced two new models that occupy the middle ground between those two price points. The onboard camera isn't the only thing that sets the Phantom 2 Vision apart from the Phantom. It also has an improved flight control system – meaning it's easier to control – plus its new battery allows for flight times of about 25 minutes as opposed to 10 to 15. Additionally, the quadcopter features self-tightening propellers, so you don't need to worry about one of the suckers popping off in mid-flight (as long as you initially mounted the right ones to the right motors). Well, if you keep all of those other improvements but lose the built-in camera, you get


Not only are the new props on this version and the Vision self-tightening, but they're also larger, allowing the quadcopter to carry a heavier payload than the original model. This is an important consideration, as the Phantom 2 is optimized for use with DJI's Zenmuse H3-2D gimbal camera mount. This particular model of the Zenmuse is designed for use with a user-supplied GoPro HERO3. It lets users remotely tilt the camera up and down, plus it automatically adjusts the orientation of the camera on two axes, in order to maintain a level shot. A dedicated lever (and a separate channel) on the Phantom 2's control unit lets users remotely-control the gimbal. The base Phantom 2, which includes the Zenmuse control module but not the gimbal itself, sells for a suggested retail price of US$679. For $879, you'll get the gimbal as part of the package.


To get a sense of this model, imagine the original Phantom – along with its 10 to 15-minute battery – then add a built-in 720p/30fps video camera. That may not be as snazzy as the Phantom 2 Vision's 1080p camera (or a GoPro), but it should still do nicely for videos that are just being posted on YouTube or viewed on the user's computer. As is the case with the Vision, an app allows users to control the camera with their mobile device, and to view first-person footage in real time from the quadcopter. They can also record footage on an SD card, located in the camera. In the case of the FC40, however, the camera angle has to be set by hand before each flight – on the Vision, the camera can be tilted by remote control. The Phantom FC40 is priced at $560. DoorBot


The DoorBot is a Wi-Fi-enabled doorbell that lets you see and talk to the visitors standing outside your entryway from an iOS or Android smartphone. When someone rings the bell, it initiates what is basically a video call on your phone. You don't even have to be at home, and you can set the DoorBot to work with multiple devices so that everyone who lives in your home can use it. It costs $200.




Extendable Magnetic Flashlight


The moment your hand brushes against your keys and they begin to slide to the back edge of the table, your adrenaline rises. You know that if you don’t act quickly enough, they’re going to to teeter on the edge and fall into the abyss (aka behind the table it’s on). Even if you don’t catch it in time there’s a way to retrieve it, but if it’s behind a more permanently installed item such as a washer or dryer, it’s not going to be fun to go after.

This happens to all of us with a variety of everyday items or tools. Your first utensil to start the rescue mission is a flashlight, and from there something to snag and retrieve your item. If you find that more often than not it is a metal object that could be drawn to a magnet, then the Extendable Telescoping Magnetic Flashlight will be just what you’re looking for. Thermal Imaging Monocular



It is not every day that you get a monocular that will allow you to observe subjects using thermal imaging technology, but when such a day arrives, you know for sure you would have to blow the monthly budget for it. Case in point, the $2,500 Thermal Imaging Monocular. This particular Thermal Imaging Monocular will be different from binoculars which normally rely upon visible light or night vision devices that happen to be affected by bright light exposure, as it will feature an uncooled, amorphous silicone microbolometer that is capable of detecting infrared thermal signatures from up to 500 yards away.

Specially designed for nighttime use as well as daytime use in inclement weather, the Thermal Imaging Monocular is able to “see through” rain, snow, fog, smoke, and vegetation, and it will work between -4° F and 122° F and up to 90% humidity, making it a tool under all circumstances. Other hardware specifications include 2X optical zoom, ±5 diopter eyepiece adjustment, and a 316-foot field of view at 500 yards, allowing the scope to be able to acquire subjects in a jiffy and easily for observation, showing them off on a .31″ OLED in high contrast black and white at 640 x 480 pixel resolution.

Pocket Grapler



This is a fanciful version of what being a spy is like in our heads. Attending high-class parties, driving awesome cars, being the object of affection to many, and fighting off enemies in style. Having the right equipment for the job is one thing, but actually carrying out that job is another thing entirely. You need to be fit, stealthy, have nerves of steel, and of course, the cool gizmos help (though resourcefulness is likely more useful than a utility belt).

Regardless of that information, I like to have nifty spy gear around in the exceedingly off-chance we can find a use for it. The Pocket Grappling Hook is one such item that won’t fit the use you have for it in your head, but can have real-world use. This was created to snag trip wires from a safe distance, rather than repelling up or down the walls of a secure facility.

Before anyone asks, no, this is not meant to hold you up, and definitely shouldn’t be used for life support functions. The spikes can unscrew and be stowed inside of the water resistant O-ring body. If you need it to be heavier when you throw it, simply fill it with dirt or water and toss away. This will cost you $35, and won’t serve any real purpose other than aesthetics unless you actually find yourself in need of snagging trip wires on the regular.
